Children and MedWHOLE volunteers celebrating a literacy programme milestone

Literacy

School was out. Four hundred and thirty of them came anyway.

Free lessons every August since 2021, and a club that has met every week for five years. Nearly half of the students are teenagers.

Children in Gosa and Kunyami lose ground every long holiday. Some never come back at term. More than fifty had already dropped out before we found them.

Literacy here is not only reading. It is understanding a prescription, sitting an exam, filling a form, knowing what you are owed.

02

Teach the subject. Build the person. Same morning.

Mathematics and English every day. A memory verse every day. From the second week, a Skill Lab — soap, beads, stools, tote bags — so that a child leaves with something they made as well as something they learned.

Career Compass, Health Hygiene and Sex Education run inside the timetable, not as extras. A child who can read but does not know how to report abuse has not been made whole.
